A one-day marketing conference in Novi Sad — Meta Ads, growth, AI and branding on one bill — and the reel I made about it, which the conference ended up sharing itself.

One day in Novi Sad, at Spotlight 2026. Meta Ads, growth, visual branding, AI and content — four tracks on one bill at the Sheraton, on a schedule that opened at three in the afternoon and was still running at one in the morning.

It wasn't a design conference. That's why I booked it.

The conference badge in my hand — "Anđela Novaković" written by hand on the yellow BUSINESS card under the Spotlight Conference header, the Sheraton's red banquet chairs and striped carpet below it.
The stage screen in the Sheraton hall under blue light, the Spotlight Conference title slide up with "28.01.2026. | Hotel Sheraton" and the sponsor logos below it.
A mirror shot in the marble hotel lobby, badge around my neck and a paper bag in hand, the lift doors behind me.

The room wasn't full of designers

Every design event I've been to is a room of people who already agree that this matters. It's a good room to be in. It's also a room where nobody asks what the work returned.

Spotlight is the other room. Media buyers, e-commerce owners, people who talk in ROAS. The promise on the poster was profit, not reach — and once you sit through a day built on that sentence, you start hearing your own work described from the far side of the handover.

A logo becomes a thumbnail 120 pixels wide in a feed. A palette becomes whether the creative survives the third scroll. That isn't a smaller way to look at design. It's the only way anyone outside this profession has ever looked at it.

Visual branding was on the bill

What I didn't expect was that branding had a track of its own, on a programme otherwise built out of ad accounts and scaling.

That's a shift worth noticing. The performance side of this industry spent years treating design as decoration you apply once the funnel works. Putting visual branding on the same schedule as Meta Ads says the opposite — that the creative is the variable, and no budget fixes a brand nobody can recall the next morning.

I've been making that argument to clients for years. It lands differently when a room of media buyers makes it first.

I came as audience and left as their content

The thing I actually took home didn't come from a stage.

I filmed the day and cut a reel about it. Nobody briefed it and nobody asked for it — the event was well made, and I wanted to make something back. The conference's own channels picked it up and shared it.

That is the whole lesson of the day, and I got to it by accident. I could have handed a card to every person in that building and reached a fraction of the people that reel did. Instead I made one good thing about someone else's event, and their audience did the introductions.

You don't get into a room by asking for the room. You get in by making something the room wants to show its own people.

I bought a ticket to sit in the audience. The best thing I did all day was make something for the people on stage.
